Criminal charges could be filed in residentÍs death (7/18/02 AP Newswires) EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The Vanderburgh County prosecutor plans to decide within a week whether to file criminal charges in the death of a resident at an Evansville nursing home. Prosecutor Stan Levco met Tuesday with the Westpark Rehabilitation Center's attorney to discuss the Jan. 7 death of Mary Mynatt. Mynatt died at a local hospital where she was taken after being removed from the nursing home at the request of her granddaughter and legal guardian, Angela Mynatt. Coroner Don Erk ruled the 80-year-old woman's death a homicide caused by electrolyte imbalance because of severe dehydration. A report by a forensic pathologist indicated Mynatt had been deprived of fluids for at least two days prior to her death. Holly Gould, a spokeswoman for Extendicare, declined to comment on the meeting between the company's attorney and Levco. Extendicare owns the nursing home. A survey by the Indiana State Department of Health found several serious deficiencies at Westpark surrounding Mynatt's death, including failure to ensure Mynatt received adequate hydration and failure to complete and maintain accurate records on Mynatt's fluid intake and changes in her medical condition. Westpark filed a plan of correction which included providing more staff training. |
