A small fire in a Columbia nursing home this morning displaced residents and a fireman at the scene suffered from heat exhaustion, according to county dispatchers.

A fire apparently started in a chair at the Cherry Street Nursing Home, 225 Cherry St. , Columbia, at about 6:30 a. m.

Columbia Fire Company and other assisting companies brought the fire under control about an hour later.

"Everyone got out safely," said Jay Loraw, one of the owners of the nursing home.

He said the fire was contained to one residential room. How it started and an estimate of damages was not yet available.

Loraw did not know how long residents would be displaced.

The American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley reported it was preparing to feed 36 residents and staff of the nursing home and 40 firemen this morning.

If needed, the Red Cross said it would set up a temporary shelter for the residents. The Red Cross was working with the nursing home's administrators and Heather Bank, a nearby nursing home, to coordinate long-term care for the residents.

The fireman reportedly received treatment for heat exhaustion at a hospital.
