Tort Reform: Summer study commission needed
(2/24/02 Clarion Ledger, MS) Editorial

The issue of "tort reform" in the Legislature appears to be all over but the shouting this year, as more than half of the session is gone without any coherent set of proposals.

If the matter were to be resurrected by floor action, lawmakers might rue the day they enacted anything, since the issues are complex and pit major political forces at odds.

Better would be for the leadership to form a joint committee to study "tort reform" over the summer for a package of bills for next year, after balancing all the interests.

In order for Mississippi to escape the "Jackpot Justice" rap, a reasoned, comprehensive approach is warranted.
